Why It’s Impossible Not to Believe in God

Seeing Is Believing
“Seeing is believing” is how we humans operate, since it’s far easier to have faith in visible things than those we can’t see.

Maybe you don’t believe in God because you can’t see Him?

Yet there are many invisible things you do believe in. Why is God not on your list?

If You Believe These Exist …

Gravity
If it weren’t for gravity, we'd be floating in space. We believe this, not because we can see gravity, but because we see it in action. It keeps us on the earth. We witness the absence of gravity through images of astronauts in space capsules without gravitational force holding them down. We know gravity exists.

Oxygen
We cannot see oxygen, but cannot live without its function. Oxygen plays an essential part in our breathing processes and metabolism. Without invisible oxygen, we would die. We have no choice but to believe in oxygen!

The Wind
No one sees the wind. But we see it operating all the time. The wind has the power to move things – making the grass and branches sway. In its extreme form it causes trees and power lines to fall. We harness the wind’s energy for our purposes. No one can deny that the wind exists.

Life & Death
We cannot see life.  We cannot see death. But we know what it looks like to possess life and be deprived of it. Without life, we are dead. We cannot ignore the reality of life or death.

Personality Traits & Moods
Some people have sunny dispositions, others are surly. There are sociable people and there are loners. Everyone shows these feelings and characteristics by the way they behave. We cannot see characteristics, but we don’t deny their reality simply because they aren’t tangible.

Evil
You cannot see evil, but you observe its manifestations daily. Hatred, jealousy, cruelty, envy, which lead to war and murder – all these are the workings of evil which none of us can ignore.

(And evil personified is the Devil - an argument for another post!)

… Then You Believe in God

The above is not an exhaustive list. But it illustrates our willing belief in things we can’t see through our witness of their operation in our lives. Our eyes observe them at work.

The greatest invisible essence of all is Love. Love is God manifesting Himself through His Creation and good works.

Christ said, “believe in the evidence of the miraculous works I have done, even if you don't believe me (what I say). Then you will know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father
(John 10:3 8 )." (My italics.)

If you do not believe in God’s Word, which existed ‘in the beginning’ and ‘was God,’ (John 1:1) then look at His Love operating through selfless acts. When Love is at work, God is at work.

We are being irrational and illogical if we separate the existence of God from the existence of other intangibles (all of which He made!).

As Jesus said to Thomas, “Blessed are those who believe without seeing Me. (John 20:29).”

St. Jude & Ulcerative Colitis

WIth ulcerative colitis the road ahead looks really bleak
The National Shrine of St. Jude explains that: “During the Middle Ages, St. Jude was widely venerated, but perhaps because of the confusion between his name and that of Judas Iscariot, he slipped into temporary obscurity.”

It is indeed unfortunate that the names of two such opposite people should sound so similar.

But luckily St. Jude Thaddeus, one of the Twelve Apostles, whose last name means “the amiable or loving,” is now recognized as the Patron Saint of Hope and Impossible Causes. Or, as my prayer book calls him, “Help of the Hopeless.”

And rightly so!

My Son’s Hopeless Case

When my son was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at age 21, I was as devastated as he was. The gastro-enterologist told him to stay on his normal diet, and prescribed medication that made him a thousand times worse. One of the side effects of that drug was - ulcerative colitis! So how could it have helped?

My son lost 40 lbs in a couple of weeks. He was trying to do college work while writhing in agony, unable to ingest anything without it going straight through him. That included water, and he was becoming dangerously dehydrated.

Online research took me to numerous forums of sufferers of the disease. Their story was always the same: they’d find something that helped for a while but it never gave lasting relief.

My son was going to be stuck with this horrible disease for the rest of his life. Nobody knew what caused it, and we were told there was no cure.

St. Jude, Please Intercede for My Son!

I was already praying daily to the Infant of Prague on my son’s behalf, and now began praying to St. Jude for his intercession.

During this time of nothing but bad news about ulcerative colitis, I knew I had to be steadfast in my resolve to trust in God’s help.

The Miracles Begin

My husband then said: “You use natural remedies on the horses with great success. Why don’t you look that up for ulcerative colitis?”

I suppose I’d been so beaten down by the sad testimonies of sufferers, that it hadn’t occurred to me there might be a natural remedy for it!

Thanks to St. Jude’s intercession, the Holy Spirit guided me through the maze of information on the internet to the one man who could help my son. He was the only person to state with confidence: ‘this disease can be reversed.’

To back up his claim he offers a detailed protocol, available to download for free, which explains how to overcome UC and other bowel disorders naturally, safely and effectively. He has a medical practice in Cincinnati and you can also have telephone consultations with him. But the protocol could be used without his help, if you prefer.

But my son wanted to take medication, even though I explained that he'd be on meds for the rest of his life.

Having blind faith is so difficult - but so necessary!
My Son Gets Worse

Then he called from college to say he was so ill he could hardly stand up with the pain, and I told him to stop taking the drugs immediately. Then I bullied the gastroenterologist into seeing him THAT DAY!

My son was in such agony he had to lie down in the consulting room while I told the ‘specialist’ that we were going to find a better treatment.

Initially resistant to the idea of taking the natural route, my son was now on my side, after suffering the debilitating effects of the ‘medication.’ We all agreed that he should take the steroids to reduce the inflammation in his colon. But after that, no more drugs, thank you!

I had downloaded and read the protocol, and it made a great deal of sense to me. It explained the huge part diet plays in bowel problems and how certain foods must be avoided in the beginning.

When I told the gastro-enterologist that my son was probably allergic and/or intolerant to certain foods, he laughed at me. “My wife is a food allergist. If this disease were related to food allergies, we could make a fortune sending my patients to her!”

Clearly we no longer needed to waste time in his office, and left with the steroid prescription.

My son and I went to lunch together, during which he ate a couple of pieces of lettuce. Tears were streaming down my face: he was so thin and haggard, and going through such pain and misery.

He said: “Don’t cry, Mum, it’s not as if I’m dying,” then dashed off to the bathroom.

I cried all the more. And prayed all the harder that we could get him through this awful time.

Hope, pray and don't worry
St. Jude Comes Through

That experience with the gastroenterologist actually saved us a lot of valuable time. Rather than lurch from one bad drug to another, as so many other sufferers do, we stopped after the first one and went straight to the protocol.

The prednisone did reduce inflammation of my son's colon, and with it, his unbearable pain. At the same time he started taking the probiotics and prebiotics and other good enzymes he needed, as well as restricting his diet to those foods which the protocol said were safe for someone in his condition.

He began to improve steadily.

Around this time I was in a café, talking to a friend about the situation, when the lady sitting next to me said that she had ulcerative colitis. But with a careful diet she’d not had any symptoms for over thirty years!

Through the intercession of St. Jude, God was sending me the signs and the help I needed to assist my son.

The Miracles Continue

My son’s improved condition encouraged us to consult with the physician who created the protocol. He organized a food allergy test with a separate company, which showed that my son is allergic to over thirty different foods. (One day I shall go back to that gastroenterologist with this information!)

This doesn’t mean that he’ll never be able to eat those foods, just that he is currently sensitive to them. Soon he can re-introduce them slowly over time and see if he’s able to add them to his diet once more.

Now, if he eats the ‘wrong’ thing, he doesn’t go into a full-blown flare-up that lasts weeks. He simply feels a little discomfort, which soon passes. His colon is finally healing.

What a turnaround from a year ago, when his (then) gastroenterologist tersely announced that he has ulcerative colitis and walked off and left us to deal with the awful news.

Thanks to St. Jude's intercession, my son is almost cured: St. Jude truly is the Saint of Hopeless Causes!
